The Earth's capacity to host and support life is coupled with our place in the Solar System and, indeed, the Universe. We live on a rare planet that keeps water on the ground and an atmosphere around it. Scientists believe that these things are vital for life. Yet, the conditions on Earth can change, and the changes can impact the planet's ability to nurture life.

This section explores how the conditions on planet Earth sustain life, what we believe life needs to survive, and how we search for that elsewhere in the Universe.
